Guinness World Record attempt
at Coalburn
Powering to the Future Sustainable Saturday
Friends of Volunteering
Clydesdale are staging an audacious Guinness World Record attempt at
Coalburn Miners Welfare on Friday 27th August and Saturday 28th August
2010. Our attempt begins and 5 pm on Friday until 5 pm on Saturday. We
aim to generate electricity from bicycles over a 24 hour period. The
record currently stands at 12,953 watts and we need at least 1000
participants to stand a chance of breaking the record. As long as you
can cycle for a minute you can become part of history and gain entry
into the hallowed Guinness Book of Records. This event can be used as a
team building event for staff or clubs or organisations can use it for
fundraising opportunities. We will be arranging free transport
throughout Clydesdale. The bikes will be provided and we will be indoors
and under a marquee.
Our heroic effort is part of our sustainable Saturday family day where
there is something for everyone and non-participants can lend their
support or enjoy other activities such as soft play area, healthy
cooking demonstrations, interactive renewable demonstrations, face
painting and bouncy castles.
ZUMBA classes
starting in Coalburn Miners' Welfare on Sunday 8th August 2010 from 7.45
- 8.45 pm.
Active Kids and Ready Steady Cook
We also have funding to
run 'Active Kids' and
'Ready Steady Cook'
and are working in partnership
with Healthy Valleys to deliver these courses but these are not due to
begin until the Autumn.
Salsa
classes
We also received funding
from 'Awards for All' to run salsa classes. These classes started on the
6th May and are scheduled to last 48 weeks. The classes are on every
Thursday between 2pm and 3pm. We have places available so if anyone is
interested please contact Helen or George at the One Stop Shop on 01555
820060.
Flower Arranging Course
Thanks to funding from 'Awards for All' a
flower arranging course has just finished in the One Stop Shop. This
course ran from Wednesday 14th April until Wednesday 19th May. A local
resident May McNeill was the tutor and eight people attended the course
each week. This again has proved to be a very popular and successful
activity and as there is some funding left another course is planned for
later in the year.
A certificate was presented to all the students taking part at the end
of the course and all completed an evaluation. The feedback was that all
had thoroughly enjoyed the class and were looking forward to the next.

COMPUTER TRAINING
Funding was received from ' Awards
for All' to deliver computer courses in the One Stop Shop. This was very
well attended and we have enough people signed up to run two beginners
courses initially. ALVO is providing the tutors for these two courses.
They will both be on a Wednesday with one class running from 10.00 am
until 12.00 noon and the next class running from 1.00 pm until 3.00 pm.
This is scheduled to begin the first week in June and will run for eight
weeks. We have funding to run another two courses and intend to run
these in the Autumn.
Computer Class at Coalburn One Stop
Shop

Nine students completed a basic training computer course at Coalburn One
Stop Shop. This course was delivered by JHP training and the tutor was
Andrew McCrory. This was made possible by the students being able to
access ILA (Individual Learning Accounts) and most were able to claim
£200 towards courses for the year 2009. People can access ILA accounts
if their income is less than £18,000 per year, unemployed or if they are
in receipt of benefits. This course was delivered over a four week
period and each course lasted 3 hours. Most of the students are going
onto complete an Advanced Computer Training Course at a later date
(hopefully within the next month), also to be held within the One Stop
Shop and delivered by JHP Training. There will also be a number of other
basic training courses and Microsoft accredited courses available soon.
An open day within the One Stop Shop is planned for 20th May 2009 for
anyone wishing to access information on these courses. There will also
be a representative in attendance from the Credit Union who wish to
start a service in Coalburn. Anyone interested in attending any course
or anyone wishing to require any further information regarding any of
the above or other services available within the One Stop Shop can
contact Helen or George on 01555 820060.

Coalburn Miners Welfare Charitable Society/One Stop Shop has no external
funding to pay revenue or running costs. We have looked at ways to raise
funds to keep the vital service that we provide for our local community.
We came up with the idea to run a community shop and food cooperative.
We have put a bid into the Lottery to purchase a local building that
would be used for the community shop but we will not know if we have
been successful until May 2009. Since the Busy Bees crèche sadly closed
at the end of September 2008 we brought forward our plans and have
opened the community shop/food cooperative in the crèche. This has been
open since 6th October 2008. We have been fortunate to have first class
volunteers who without their help would not be able to operate. We would
also like to thank all who donated a very high quality of goods to the
community shop, books, toys, DVD’s, videos, various household items and
all have sold well. If anyone wishes to donate to the community shop
goods can be brought in Monday to Friday 9.00 am – 5.00 pm. The opening
hours of the community shop are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 10.00
am – 2.00 pm. These hours may be extended and anyone wishing to
volunteer can contact Helen or George at the One Stop Shop on 01555
820060.
Fruit and vegetables can be ordered on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday
and will be available for collection the following day.
'Awards For All'
Coalburn Miners Welfare Charitable Society received a grant from Big
Lottery 'Awards for All' for ££9,290.
This is to enable us to deliver the following activities within the One
Stop Shop:
Computer Classes
Flower Arranging
Salsa Classes
Active Kids Classes
Ready Steady Cook
If anyone is interested in any of the above please contact the One Stop
Shop on 01555 820060 or e-mail:
